The American Bar Association established the ABA Task Force for American Democracy in 2023 to inspire and mobilize legal professionals to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law, and the courts.
In a short time, thousands of lawyers were mobilized to engage in national and local election and democracy defense activities. The Task Force co-hosted listening tours, webinars, and media education sessions, produced CLEs, and participated in a wide range of media activities to emphasize the importance of lawyers' duties in defending democracy.
These efforts helped lawyers become trusted, non-partisan voices on issues related to the rule of law and democracy. With the success of a secure 2024 election behind us, the Task Force’s focus now shifts.
There is an urgent need for democracy advocates to safeguard an independent judiciary, preserve the separation of powers, and educate the public on the laws, civics, and norms that have long sustained our government.
In this time of rapid change, we encourage you to visit this site often for unbiased information on current legal issues. There are many ways to get involved in the safeguarding process, and we ask that you share the information here widely.
This site is designed to provide easy access to the tools needed to fulfill the task force's calls to action.
The integrity of American democracy depends on public trust in our elections and institutions. Yet, misinformation, polarization, and attacks on the rule of law have put that trust at risk. The legal community has a unique role in addressing these threats—not just in the courtroom but in communities across the country.
